Scholarship for African Students for a MAs in Public Health at AUB, Lebanon

/ / Jobs and Internships

It gives us great pleasure to communicate to you that we have 5 scholarships open for the academic year 2015-2016 for African students who would like to pursue graduate education in public health at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) of the American University of Beirut, Lebanon (AUB).  We are reaching out to all the MCF SP partners on the African continent to help us inform prospective students of these scholarships, and to help us identify students who would fit the MCF SP criteria, including financial disadvantage. We particularly rely on our African partners for this as we are unfamiliar with the context of disadvantage in Africa.

The scholarships will be open for the following degrees offered by the Graduate Public Health Program (GPHP) at FHS:

  1. Master of Public Health (MPH) with 3 areas of concentration:

o   Epidemiology and Biostatistics (EPBS)

o   Health Promotion and Community Health (HPCH)

o   Health Management and Policy (HMP)

  1. Master of Science in Epidemiology (MS EPID)

The GPHP was accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) in 2006 and was the first graduate public health program to be accredited by CEPH outside the Americas. It was re-accredited in 2012 for 7 years and remains the only such accredited program in Africa, Asia, and the Arab world.

The deadline for application to the GPHP MCF SP scholarships is June 2, 2015.  General information about the GPHP degrees can be found below.

Admission to the GPHP

To be eligible for admission, students must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Good academic record in undergraduate education (and graduate education where relevant).

o   A candidate is eligible to be considered for admission to the MPH program if s/he (a) holds a bachelor’s degree from AUB, or an equivalent degree from another recognized institution, with a cumulative average of at least 75 and an average of at least 80 or its equivalent in the major field of study; or (b) holds a graduate degree from AUB or another recognized institution with a cumulative average of 80 or its equivalent.

o   In order to consider applicants to the GPHP uniformly/equally, the admission averages (major and/or cumulative) of students coming from Universities that have a different passing grade are converted. Additionally, the concerned applicants are required to submit an official letter explaining the grading system of their university. The letter should include information regarding the passing grade at the concerned university and the rank of the concerned student as compared to his class.

  • Proficiency in English demonstrated by passing the University English Entrance Examination (EEE), or by achieving the minimum required score for TOEFL examination or IELTS.

o   Information on the required scores for the different English proficiency tests may be found on page 37 of the online Graduate Catalogue (link below). http://www.aub.edu.lb/registrar/Documents/catalogue/graduate14-15/admissions.pdf

o   Applicants who do not meet the English Language Proficiency Requirements will be required to enroll in English language courses before or upon starting their graduate degree programs (depending on the English course level). The placement in the different available levels of English courses is dependent on the applicant’s score in the English Proficiency tests (EEE, TOEFL, or IELTS).

Duration of the GPHP degrees

Both degrees will take two years to complete.

Graduation Requirements
