Internship/Job Requirements and Application Instructions:
This internship will offer students research opportunity to study the effect of tea extracts on modulating immune functions and blocking infections of human infectious diseases including viruses. The laboratory of infectious diseases and immunology is a part of the Institute of Pu’er Tea, Yunnan Agriculture University (YNAU)

The laboratory is located on the beautiful campus of YNAU and is within the city of Kunming, thecapital city of the Yunnan Province of China. Our research is directed at understanding the effect of extracts isolated from tea leaves on modulating immune functions and blocking infections of human infectious diseases including influenza viruses, hepatitis B virus, HIV, and herpesviruses. We are in close collaboration with groups of plant biologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, immunologists, and infectious disease specialists in the Institute to isolate and purify the tea extracts and carry out experiments to study the mechanism of immunomodulatory and antiviral effect of the extracted components found in tea. Furthermore, we also participate in other projects in the Institute in studying the effect of tea extracts on human metabolism including lipid and carbohydrates and examining the roles of tea in preventing diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

The Interns will work under the direction of the heads of the laboratory and their senior staff to assist on a current research project, to be determined after mutual consultation with the Intern. The Intern will be expected to contribute to the work of carrying out experiments and collecting and analyzing research data. He or she will also be expected to produce a written intellectual product by the end of the internship such as a literature review, a research manuscript, or a grant proposal. Interns should have basic public health coursework, familiarity with computerdatabases and excellent writing ability. They should be willing to be mature contributors to a working laboratory Group and to work responsibility with other members of the group.

Students will be provided $5000 to cover international travel and living expense for 2-2.5 month work, provided that appropriate receipts for international travel expenses are provided.
