The One Health Student Summer Research Program is sponsored by the UC Global Health Institute’s Center of Expertise on One Health: Water, Animals, Food and Society (One Health COE). This is the second time that this opportunity is being offered. OBJECTIVE: This program aims to provide graduate and professional students throughout the University of California system an opportunity to experience the One Health approach to global health research. The objective of the One Heath Summer Research Program is to encourage UC graduate and professional students to explore a One Heath approach to research.

ONE HEALTH: One Health is a practical and innovative approach to local and global health challenges that recognizes the interconnections among humans, animals and their shared environment as well as the economic, cultural and physical factors that influence health. In California or globally, larger and more sustainable health benefits are likely to result if research and interventions are collaborative across these human, animal (domestic and wildlife), and ecosystem health sectors rather than individually targeted at each of these factors individually and in isolation from each other.

AWARDS: Multiple (at least 5) research fellowships of $5,000 will be awarded on a competitive basis to students enrolled in graduate or professional programs on any of the 10 UC campuses to support their One Health research project during the summer months of 2015 (June – September).

FOR FAVORABLE CONSIDERATION: Applicants for these fellowships must a) demonstrate an understanding and application of the One Health approach to an important health problem, taking into consideration at least 2 of the 3 perspectives (human, animal, environment), b) explain how this project aligns with their career goals in One Health/global health and c) describe a scientifically sound project that aligns with the Mission of the One Health COE that can be accomplished during this award period.

How to Apply to the One Health Summer Research Program

Qualifications:

To qualify for funding applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a registered graduate or professional student at a University of California campus at the time of selection and throughout the summer of 2015.
  • Have a University of California faculty member as a mentor who agrees to the conditions of mentorship and submits a mentor letter of support.
  • Two students may apply together for a single $5,000 fellowship; however, they must be working on the same project with the same mentor.
  • Agree to all expectations and conditions of the summer research award.

Prior to Applying:

  • Begin preparing now! Your application must be received by 11:59pm, April 1, 2015 (no exceptions).
  • Choose a research area of interest that considers at least 2 of the 3 components of a One Health approach: 1) human health, 2) animal (domestic or wildlife) health and 3) environmental health or environmental impacts on human-animal health.
  • Please review and consider the Mission of the One Health Center below as you prepare your applications as one of the criteria for evaluation will be to assess how the project relates to this mission:The mission of the One Health COE is to assess and respond to global health problems arising at the human-water-animal-food interface and to design, implement, and evaluate practical, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions that focus on the foundations of health in collaboration with local partners. Research promoted by the One Health COE focuses on the application of the One Health transdisciplinary approach to addressing complex problems such as the reduction of disease and death resulting from malnutrition, mitigation of unsafe water or air, investigation of zoonotic and vector-borne diseases, reducing human-animal conflict, etc. with the aim of designing, implementing and evaluating interventions to improve human and animal health at the national, regional, community, and household level.
  • Identify a faculty member who will agree to serve as your research mentor for the summer. Together, the student applicant and faculty mentor should develop the research proposal for fellowship funding consideration.

Review Process:

  • A select committee of faculty affiliated with the UCGHI One Health COE will review applications and rank them on the basis of scientific merit and the career objectives of the applicant.
  • Applications will be funded based on numerical rank order.
  • Review decisions will be finalized by April 21, 2015.
  • Students will be notified of the decision by email directly after the review decisions are made. Acknowledgement and agreement to all terms and conditions of the award must be returned by the successful applicant within one week of notification of award.
